THE ONE-LANE MEEMS BOTTOM BRIDGE NEAR MT. JACKSON IS A STEP BACK IN TIME

THE VALLEY PIKE

A Journey on US 11

ESTIMATED LENGTH: 300 miles

ESTIMATED TIME: 3 days

HIGHLIGHTS: Uncoiling through fertile farmland, US 11 stitches together a series of splendid towns and cities such as Lexington, Staunton, Harrisonburg, New Market, Woodstock, and Strasburg. Lovely scenery dominates the drive. You will find Civil War history along the way and a number of venerable colleges and universities worth visiting even if they’re not your alma mater, such as Lexington neighbors Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. You can drive over a natural wonder like Natural Bridge and walk through one of the numerous caverns—Endless, Luray, or Shenandoah, among others. Surprises include the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, the Route 11 Potato Chips factory near Mt. Jackson, and the Green Valley Book Fair, where you can browse among the stacks of a half-million discount-priced books. The southernmost stretch includes Roanoke, with its museums and restaurants, as well as other worthy stops, including artsy Abingdon, Draper Mercantile (along New River Trail State Park) and Big Walker Lookout and Country Store.

GETTING THERE: This drive along US 11 stretches between Winchester (near the West Virginia line) to the north and Bristol (on the Virginia-Tennessee line) to the south. Winchester is just off I-81, about 15 miles south of the West Virginia line. US 11 parallels I-81 the entire distance and, in some stretches, is I-81.
